There are many false beliefs when it comes to dog training techniques. A lot of people would have probably told you things that you should not do with your dog. For example, someone might tell you not to play tug of war with your dog. Or another might say not to let your dogs to sleep on your bed in any circumstance, or not to feed them with people food.
As you go on your way to training your dogs, you will encounter more false beliefs people tell you not to do with your dogs. But you will also find out that playing tug of war with your dog is actually a very nice thing to do. Sleeping on your bed with your dogs will not make them into vampires either. And giving them people food to eat would, in fact, help them grow into healthier dogs.
Just always remember these things when it comes to puppy training advice: Every dog is different and every household is unique. Letting your dogs sleep in the bed with you is not a problem if you let them understand first and foremost that you are in charge.
Try letting your dogs use the couch or your bed. If they understand that you are in control, they will immediately go away if you tell them to. They will not struggle with you or anything. Rather they will simply obey everything that you order them to do. Once they start defending the couch as if it was their own, discipline them by taking away their privileges to use it.
When you are training a pup, try putting down a chain for him to pull on. This will let you gain more control over the pup. Sometimes, your pup may steal something and run away and you have to chase after him around coffee tables, behind couches or even up your stairs. With a chain, you will not worry about chasing after your pup. You just have to step on the chain and you will gain control over him again. The rules apply when you teach the word “off” to your dog.
So here’s what you should do to teach him. Simply go up to your dog and command him to go off. If your dog doesn’t pay any attention, lift the chain and yank it. Do this over and over until your dog leaves your couch without you making any contact with the chain. As soon as your dog understands what the concept of the word “off”, you and your dog will get along fine.
